What is IMT?
Integrative Manual Therapy is a non-invasive, hands-on, pain-free therapy. Instead of addressing the symptom, we address the root cause of your pain.
Our clients come to us with complaints ranging from stress and chronic pain, to complex issues such as chronic low back pain, peripheral neuropathy, issues such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), temporal mandibular joint (TMJ) syndrome, tinnitus, and residual effects of concussions.
Our therapy process always begins with a discussion. When did the pain, stress, or illness begin? What exactly does it feel like? What other approaches have you tried and how much have they helped?
Our integrative manual therapy in Williamsburg VA
Integrative Manual Therapy uses an integrative systems approach. It is a whole person therapy that targets and addresses various systems of the body — muscular skeletal, fascial, skin, nervous, digestive, endocrine, immune, respiratory, circulatory, lymphatic, and others.
In our assessment, we may discover that where you’re feeling pain is not actually where your pain originates. We often discover, for instance, that shoulder and neck pain can originate in your hips.
Integrative manual therapy lets us address each issue in the context of all of your body’s interdependent systems. It’s not uncommon for patients to wonder whether their emotions can play a part in pain and discomfort. And our answer is “yes.”
Emotions and stress, some going very far back in time, can come to reside in certain parts of our bodies. Our therapies work to release these strongholds of emotions and stress. A good example of stress we can help you with is post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which can cause complex effects in your body over time.
We speak of releasing pain because pain becomes free to leave when its underlying causes are addressed.
IMT is a unique assessment tool
IMT has its origins in osteopathic manual therapy. In fact, the developers of IMT include chiropractors, physical therapists, osteopaths, and specialists in neurology and pain management.
IMT’s primary developer is Sharon Giammatteo, PhD, PT, IMTC, who began the development of IMT in the 1970s. Sharon and her colleagues continue to develop IMT today at the IMT headquarters in West Hartford, Connecticut.
Something to consider
If you’re feeling pain or discomfort, you may have tried traditional medicine, chiropractry, physical therapy, and possibly other approaches to reducing or eliminating your pain or discomfort. That’s true for most of our clients.
We find ourselves providing the missing link for your healing process to move forward. Nearly every one of our clients tells us that we have substantially reduced or completely eliminated their pain.
We like to say, “Never give up. Our therapies relieve and can resolve pain permanently.”
